Common Questions
The answers below are intended to help residents, families, and referral partners prepare for treatment.
Final details will be confirmed during the intake process.
How do I start the intake process?
To begin the intake process, call Northstar Recovery at 604-451-9854 or toll-free at 1-888-940-9854. A member of the intake team can answer questions, review next steps, and help determine whether Northstar Recovery is the right fit.
How do I get to Northstar Recovery?
The intake team may be able to help coordinate pick-up for new arrivals from the airport, ferry, or within the Lower Mainland by car. Pick-ups must be arranged in advance with your intake worker.
What kind of addiction concerns does Northstar support?
Northstar Recovery supports women seeking help with substance use and recovery. This may include alcohol, opioids, stimulants, cannabis, and other substances.
If your situation involves a related behavioural or process concern, please speak with intake so the team can confirm whether Northstar is the right fit for your needs.
What services may not be covered during my stay?
Some services may not be covered by the program. Non-BC residents, or residents without valid MSP coverage, may be responsible for costs related to medical care, ambulance transportation, emergency room visits, hospitalization, outside counselling, massage therapy, dental care, medications, or other third-party services.
Any costs charged by outside providers are usually paid directly to that provider.
What should I bring to treatment?
Please pack lightly. Northstar provides towels and bedding. In most cases, residents should bring one suitcase and one carry-on bag with weather-appropriate clothing, shoes, toiletries, prescribed medications, important documents, and a few small comfort items.
Please pack lightly and bring only what you need. Northstar provides towels and bedding. For a detailed list of recommended items and items to leave at home, download the Northstar Recovery Packing Guide below.
If you are unsure whether an item is allowed, please ask the intake team before arrival.
What about medications and supplements?
All medications and supplements must be reviewed and stored securely by Northstar Recovery staff. Medications are dispensed as prescribed.
Please bring prescription medications in their original packaging, along with a current list of medications, dosages, allergies, and pharmacy information. If you take over-the-counter medications, vitamins, supplements, or liquid medications, speak with intake before packing them.
Can I bring my phone or tablet?
During the initial stabilization period, residents do not have access to their personal cellphone. After stabilization, many residents are allowed access to their phone according to program guidelines.
A house phone is available, and residents can request access to their phone for personal calls, banking, or other approved needs, usually outside of group or counselling times.
Please do not bring extra devices such as laptops, tablets, cameras, smartwatches, or internet-connected devices unless they have been approved by staff before arrival.
Can I bring a vehicle or large personal belongings?
Northstar Recovery does not have space to store vehicles, furniture, or large amounts of personal belongings. Please arrange storage before arrival if you have extra items, furniture, or a vehicle.
Can family or friends visit during treatment?
Friends and family may be able to visit after the stabilization period. Visits must be planned in advance, approved by the Client Care Department, and scheduled during appropriate free time.
Can I work while in treatment?
Primary care residents cannot work while attending the treatment program.
After graduation, residents who continue into sober living may be encouraged to work, volunteer, or return to school as part of their ongoing recovery plan.
